Chocolate Waffles

  1. 1 3/4 cup all purpose flour
  2. 6 tablespoons sugar
  3. 4 teaspoons baking powder
  4. 1/2 teaspoon salt
  5. 1 cup milk
  6. 2 large eggs
  7. 3 tablespoons shortening
  8. 2 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
  9. Nonstick spray
  10. For serving: cocoa powder, ice cream, chocolate sauce

  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Kristina Vanni
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and eggs. Kristina Vanni 
  4. Add the milk and egg mixture to the flour mixture; stir to combine. Kristina Vanni
  5. Melt the shortening and chocolate in a heat-safe bowl over a pot of simmering water. Kristina Vanni
  6. Alternately, the shortening and chocolate can be melted in a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave at 30 second intervals, stirring after each time. Kristina Vanni 
  7. Stir chocolate mixture into the waffle batter. Kristina Vanni
  8. Preheat a waffle iron and brush with butter or coat with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Kristina Vanni 
  9. Spoon the batter into hot waffle iron and spread out toward edges. Close the lid and cook until the waffles have reached desired doneness. Kristina Vanni 
  10. Repeat with remaining waffle batter. Kristina Vanni 
  11. Dust waffles with cocoa powder just before serving. Kristina Vanni 
  12. Serve a la mode with a scoop of ice cream and a drizzle of your favorite chocolate sauce.


  1. If you are serving a crowd, it is easy to keep the first waffles warm while the other batches cook. Simply place them in a single layer on a baking sheet in a 200 F oven. They will stay just was warm and fresh from the first batch to the last.
