Gather the ingredients.
Preheat the oven to 400 F.
Combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
Combine the vinegar, milk, and vanilla extract in a separate measuring cup.
Add in the chopped butter and mix into the flour with a pastry blender. You can also process the dough in a food processor.
Once the butter is incorporated and you have fine crumbs, add in the whole milk mixture, the dried cranberries, and dried cherries. Combine using a spatula. Be gentle and don't over mix the dough. If it is a little dry then add in a tiny bit more milk.
Lay out the dough on a floured surface and flatten into a round disk. Cut out heart shapes using a heart shaped cookie cutter. You can also just cut it into pie like slices.
Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the top of the scones with the beaten egg and then sprinkle with the coarse sugar.
Bake for 25 minutes, until golden brown.
