Apple Dumplings With Cinnamon Syrup

  1. 2 cups flour
  2. 2 teaspoons baking powder
  3. 1/2 teaspoon salt
  4. 10 tablespoons butter (or shortening)
  5. 1/2 cup milk
  6. 4 to 6 Granny Smith apples (or other cooking apples, cored, peeled, and thinly sliced)
  7. 1/2 cup granulated sugar for sprinkling on apples
  8. 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  9. 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  10. 3 tablespoons cold butter (cut into small pieces)
  11. For the Syrup:
  12. 2 cups granulated sugar (or brown sugar)
  13. 2 cups water
  14. 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  15. 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  16. 1/4 cup butter (melted)
  17. Optional: heavy cream or ice cream


  1. Gather the ingredients.
  2. Preheat the oven to  375 F/190 C/Gas 5.
  3. Lightly butter a large, shallow baking dish.
  4. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt; cut in the butter until mixture resembles coarse meal. Gradually add the milk, stirring to make a soft dough. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface into a 1/8-inch thick rectangle. cut the rolled out dough into 5-inch squares.
  5. Place several pieces of apple on each square of dough. Sprinkle each with about 2 teaspoons sugar and a light sprinkling cinnamon and nutmeg to taste; dot with a few pieces of butter.
  6. Moisten edges of each dumpling with water; bring corners to center, pinching edges to seal. Repeat with the remaining apples and dough.
  7. Place dumplings 1 inch apart in the prepared baking dish.
  8. Gather the ingredients.
  9. In a saucepan, combine sugar, water, cinnamon, nutmeg, and melted butter; bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Pour the syrup over the dumplings.
  10. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the dumplings are golden brown.
  11. Serve hot with a drizzling of cream or a scoop of ice cream.
